Swimming Lessons

As Grande Prairie’s most comprehensive aquatic facility, we offer a variety of swimming lessons from preschool ages, up to adult learn to swim. With small class sizes and experienced instructors, our swimming lessons focus on water safety, build fitness and endurance in the water, plus give students lifelong aquatic skills and valuable knowledge.

Does swimming better and faster while getting into better shape interests you? If you answered yes, then we encourage you to come out and join the Grande Prairie Masters swim team to swim better and faster. You must be an adult ages 18 or older and have swim skills in a minimum of backstroke and freestyle.

Competitive program focus is on lifesaving skills based on the Lifesaving Society's Sport Program. These include but are not limited to: obstacle swim, swim with fins, manikin carry, tow with fins and relays. Competitions are optional.

Focus is on lifeguarding skills based on the Lifesaving Society's Rookie, Ranger, and Star Program. Further swimmers are given the option to challenge their Bronze Star (12&under), Bronze Medallion (13+) and Bronze Cross.

Recreational dive classes will teach the basic dive fundamentals on both the spring boards, and platforms. Learn to dive in a fun and safe environment. Must be comfortable in deep water and be able to complete a swim test.

The Discovery Kayak Program is all about providing a unique experience for kids to engage in kayaking. For 8-12 year olds.

This lesson is designed to develop or increase swimmers' comfort in the water through basic floatation, movement, and breathing skills. Swimmers learn basic knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to stay safe in, on and around the water.

Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens, and for participants in Red Cross Swim Kids who require additional work on a stroke to complete the level.

Swimmers further develop the front and back glide with kick, front and back swim, jump into deep water, swim with a PFD in deep water, and swim 10 metres continuously.

This class is for beginners participating without a parent or caregiver. Using games and activities, this level is an introduction to skills in swimming, glides, and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with kick, increase distance on front and back swim, learn the sitting dive, and will be able to swim 15 metres continuously upon completion of the level.

Swimmers receive an orientation to the water. Swimmers work on floats, glides, and kicking, while building their endurance to swim 5m.

Swimmers work on propulsions skills to move through the water and continue to work on their glides and front swim. An introduction to deep water activities and PFD's rounds out this level.

Swimmers are introduced to diving and how to make wise choices about when and where to swim. Swimmers continue to work on glides and their endurance to a distance of 15m.

Swim Kids 4 introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety.

An introduction to back crawl, sculling and whip kick is the main focus of this level. Swimmers continue to build endurance to a distance of 50m and their front crawl. Boating is introduced as a water safety item.

Swimmers start to refine their front crawl and back crawl, they are introduced to elementary backstroke and continue to develop endurance to a distance of 75m. Ice safety and rescue of others is introduced.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry and swim 150 metres continuously.

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (75m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn breast stroke (15m), learn eggbeater/tread water, perform feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and swim 300 metres continuously.

A combination level where swimmers build endurance to distances of 400m (RCSK 9) and 500m (RCSK 10). Swimmers continue to refine their strokes and learn about making wise choices, peer influences and ice safety.
